Dominic Solanke rescued a 1-1 draw for 10-man Tottenham to ramp up the pressure on Manchester United boss Michael Carrick on Saturday.

Solanke stooped to head in Sandro Tonali’s cross to leave United with just six points from their opening six league games. Roberto De Zerbi’s men took until the closing stages of their fifth league game to even score a goal and a much improved performance was undone by a familiar lack of cutting edge up front. Manchester City won 1-0 at Old Trafford last month despite playing for more than an hour with 10 men.

Before kick-off, the United supporters took aim at local rivals City, who have been found guilty on more than 100 charges of breaking Premier League financial rules. “We’re making it a little bit more difficult for ourselves. We can defend the whole phase a lot better as a team and be a lot more stubborn and ruthless to see the game out. “We played for the team-mates, we played together. We believed until the end of the game.

“For the first time in this season we showed we are a team,” said De Zerbi.

Earlier reporting noted: United have taken just six points from their opening six Premier League games, their lowest haul at this stage of a league campaign for 30 years. Solanke’s stoppage time header edged Spurs off the foot of the Premier League table after it seemed like they would pay a heavy price for not taking their chances in a dominant display at Old Trafford.

Earlier reporting noted: Carrick demands more ‘streetwise’ Man Utd after Spurs setback Michael Carrick said Manchester United need to become more “streetwise” and “stubborn” after they blew a late lead against 10-man Tottenham to draw 1-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Earlier reporting noted: Carrick’s men were booed off at half-time and at the end of the match after a Tottenham side that began the day bottom of the table dominated for large spells.
